A miracle at Attu : the rescue of CG-1600 / by Captain Bill Peterson (USCG ret.) with Captain Mike Wallace (USCG ret.).

Peterson, Bill, (author.). Wallace, Mike, (author.).

Summary:

In 1982 a U.S. Coast Guard HC-130H aircraft crashed while completing a logistics mission to the remote Coast Guard Long Range Navigation Station on Attu Island, Alaska, leaving nine survivors stranded on a cold, isolated mountain side. Retired United States Coast Guard Captain Bill Peterson recounts the complex, dangerous mission to rescue those survivors, where he served as a helicopter pilot. His account of the mission puts the entire rescue into historical context, including Attu during World War II, Alaska Native history, and Coast Guard aviation history.
