Summary:

A young southerner (Baldwin) travels to Washington, D.C. to seek his fortune, and gets a job as a cabbie in a company owned and managed by a friend of his late father (Gail). The wide-eyed youth is determined to win acceptance by the rag-tag group of crazies who are the drivers for the struggling cab company.
